The Welsh Terrier is a fierce opponent for varmints and rodents. Some might mistake it for a small Airedale Terrier. This dog loves to tumble about, play a little rough, and is well known for its curiosity and vigorous, energetic nature. The breed goes back more than 200 years to Wales. Its forebear is the Old English Black and Tan Terrier, and it goes back to the Middle Ages. For a while, the Welsh terrier itself was called the Old English Terrier and the Black and Tan Rough Haired Terrier. It had an official inception in the latter 1800's. It was bred to be a harrowing hunter with a stoic, patient, pursuing nature. It's difficult to train, and it should really be allowed to be who it is. It has a nature that's suitable for the country or the city. Like most Terriers, it's joyful, vibrant, spirited, and loves to run after anything that scurries, jumps, or even moves. British farmers used this to eradicate rodents from their farms. The Welsh Terrier can hunt swimming creatures, foxes, birds, and badgers proficiently. They're very active indoors, and their coats need immoderate grooming. Its coat needs to be stripped, i.e., plucked of dead hairs, three times annually. The dog lives about 15 years. It needs activities to do each day to stoke its deep & vibrant intellect. It likes to dig, swim, and sometimes subvert its master's wishes. It's a fun dog for large families that are active and enterprising outdoors. This dog likes pursuits, chases, and games. It can tell when you're trying to train it, and it could try to distract you from the training exercise. Its coat needs to be plucked two or three times yearly. It needs lots of weekly brushing. It's a poor guard dog that needs many activities to stay fit. They are prone to epilepsy, glaucoma, and thyroid problems. It's an open-air dog that will dig up plants and ferret out rodents and mice around the grounds. The Welsh Terrier is apt to jump over fences, even ones that go up six feet. They like to dig in the ground, wade in the water, and discover new things 24/7. Welsh Terriers aren't as mean-spirited or feisty as other terriers. They're bold and brash, but they're affectionate more so. Most Welsh Terriers will hold their own and fight back if struck or attacked. This dog rarely tires of playtime and energy expenditure. It's a fun dog for children because it will chase things and play with the child close at hand too. Watch out because this dog can scale a fence if it's possible. The Welsh Terrier has a wiry, close-fitting, dense, almost curly coat that comes in black, tan, and grizzle mixtures. Welsh Terriers are friendly and happy around all types of people.
