The Silky Terrier, Sydney Terrier, Australian Silky Terrier, and Silky Toy Terrier are all names given to this delightful breed. The dog is not a restful lap dog. Unlike some well regarded, albeit sluggish, breeds, this dog is not one to act as a living pillow. It's always full of energy and highly curious. You'll find it digging, chasing, and prancing to and fro. It can become peevish or irritated with rough-and-tumble play from little children so watch that it's not ill-treated or mishandled. The dog should be raised with cats at a young age or else it will find them good targets for a chase when it reaches maturity. It's a bit willful, but a voracious appetite for new knowledge balances it out. It's wary of strange visitors or other dogs. Like most people, it's got common sense going for it.
The Silky Terrier has a single coat that’s open to tangles and mats without sufficient grooming. It’s glossy, smooth, and shiny. The coat comes in tan and blue mixtures. The tan is dark and rich. The blue can come in slate, silver, pigeon, or metallic shades. The coat is about 5 inches long, and it extends from the skull to the tip of the tail. It weighs 8 to 11 pounds, and it’s 9 to 10 inches high at the withers. It’s, indeed, a true toy terrier. Daily brushing and combing is required to remove the many mats and tangles that pop up. 10 minutes a day is better than nothing. It needs regular baths. Socialize them well with cats and other dogs or it will become aggressive and chase cats and pick fights with other dogs. This breed is smart, cheerful, and willful. Terriers don’t come any other way. It’s sometimes prone to Elbow Dysplasia, Luxating Patellas, Epilepsy, Tracheal collapse, Disc disease, and Legg-Perthes.
The Silky Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. It has 3 to 5 puppies in its litters. They form durable bonds with their owners, but they’re cautious and shy toward strangers. This dog doesn’t go in for babying or spoiling. It’s vigorous, buggy, and earnest. It wants to be treated as an equal, on parity with the family it lives with. It will usually become close to one member of the group over the others. It will be pleasant with the rest of the family. It will barely tolerate strangers.
The Silky Terrier developed in the latter part of the 19th century in Australia. Native Australian Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers were crossbred to make this breed. Conflicting reports of the standard were sent in from different provinces in Australia, but they settled upon a single standard after 26 years of contesting one another. Silky Terriers are companions, first and foremost.
