During the early 1900's, the Rat Terrier was one of the most common farm dogs. Farmers began breeding them to Whippets, Italian Greyhounds and other "snap dogs" to increase speed. Others in the Central and Southern regions bred their dogs to Beagles for hunting purposes. These early crosses gave the breed the speed, "nose" and the good disposition they are known for. The Miniature Rat Terrier is a smaller version and makes a wonderful companion.
