The Manchester Terrier is an English Toy Terrier. John Hulme developed it to kill rats so it has the familiar moniker, rat terrier. He lived in Manchester, England. It's a hybrid cross of the Black & Tan Terrier and Whippet. It's not even remotely related to the Doberman Pinscher, although it looks quite similar. It was purported to be the best rat-hunting dog in Great Britain, taking home awards from several contests. Fanciful folklore leads some people to believe that the dog had some hidden vengeance with the rat, but sane breeders simply bred the traits right into the genes. The Standard variety is a much better rat-killing dog than the toy variety. The dog's ubiquity has since greatly diminished even though it enjoyed a big spurt when toy dogs were en vogue in Great Britain.
The Manchester Terrier, or a similar variety thereof, is over 5 centuries old. The two varieties have different specifications. The toy version is 10 to 12 inches high at the withers, and the standard version is 15 to 16 inches. Likewise, the toy breeds' weight is 6 to 12 pounds, and the standard breeds' weight is 12 to 22 pounds. The dog has a long, tapering nose that is good for getting into nooks and crevices and nabbing the prey. It has beady, alert, dark eyes and a scissors bite. Its ear comes in three standard forms: cropped, erect, or button. They're naturally shaped like triangles. The temperament is eager, vigorous, lively, fast-paced, keen, whip-smart, individualistic, loyal, and committed to its master. Terriers often display these traits. In fact, the predecessor of the Manchester Terrier is the oldest known Terrier.
The Manchester Terrier needs to have plenty of exercise to keep it in a naturally good condition and happy mood. One or two daily walks are barely sufficient. This is a dog that likes to have time off the leash to sprint, chase, and explore. However, insecure areas are high-risk because the dog can run after a car or animal and engender dangerous circumstances. This dog will often keep pace with you if you're bicycling, but build up gradual speed. These dogs have a virtuoso in playtime that is characteristic of Terriers. They're tenacious, raucous, and they adore all types of amusement.
The Manchester Terrier has downsides to consider before purchasing. It can snap or bite if it's provoked. Additionally, it likes to bark. It's a sporty dog that needs to expend a lot of energy. Without this energy expenditure, it can become destructive, angry, or overly protective. It's an athletic dog that can live up to 15 years. Provided it has the right amusements, trinkets, and dog toys, an apartment is all right for it. The apartment has one caveat. The dog must be taken outdoors for at least 1 hour per day to have its exercise requirements. Terriers are barkers, diggers, chasers, and fighters. They display aggression and spunk towards other dogs, people, and rodents. They have a fearlessness and cleverness that makes them hard dogs for pastoral owners. They prefer the limelight, the action, and the hunt. Buy dog food that is specially formulated for small dogs, and ask your veterinarian to check for glaucoma and Von Willebrand's disease. Even though the dog lives 15 years or more, these are conditions to watch out for. The short black and tan coat has minimal grooming, and the toy dog doesn't shed whatsoever. Manchester Terriers are feisty.
