The Fox Terrier has many varieties including the Wirehaired, Smooth, Toy, and Miniature prefixes. The Wirehaired and Smooth versions are similar except for coat differences, and the Toy and Miniature share many traits as well. They originated out of necessity. Many foxhunts would be sabotaged if the fox reached its hole. It would be out of sight and impossible to hunt. The dog had to have stamina to keep up the pace of Foxhounds, be ruthless to combat the cornered fox, and be diminutive enough to get into the fox's lair. The Brazilian, Japanese, Rat, Tenterfield, and Chilean Terriers were all descended or closely related to the original Fox Terriers. Fox Terriers are descended from Dachshunds, English Hounds, Fox Hounds, and Beagles. Today, the decreased energy devoted to fox hunts makes this breed more suitable as a family pet. The Fox Terrier is vicious to its enemies though. Rodents are well aware of its strong teeth and jaws, eager jump, and physical prowess. It's blessed with several foxhunting abilities. This distinguished, fashionable dog vanquishes varmints. Originally, it startled the fox out of its cuddly lair with growls, snaps, and harassment. Eventually, the fox would scatter and jump out. The Fox Terrier owes its name to the many fox hunts it salvaged for the fox hunting parties. The Fox Terrier is 13 to 15 inches high at the withers for females, and it's 14 to 16 inches high for males. Female dogs weigh 13 to 18 pounds, and male dogs weigh 15 to 20 pounds. This dog is also called the Foxy, and it has a lifespan of 15 years plus. The coat pattern is always white, black, or tan. It can be a combination of any of these colors or it can sport a piebald coloring on the coat. It can be maintained with a normal, consistent brushing with a firm bristle brush. It sheds much like other dogs, and it's just average in the amount of hair it loses annually. It's an outdoor dog at heart that enjoys a good journey through the woods, streams, and meadows. It likes to take journeys, scavenge, and hunt. The Fox Terrier of today is used on the hunt, to perform tricks, to watch and alert, and to track animals. It's agile, and it's a good performer on the show dog circuit. It has some problems that can be overcome, but they're not the best at-home dogs in general. For instance, barking, growling, food bowl guarding, and dominance around a shy owner are hazardous. It's also bad around small rodents and birds for obvious reasons. It has a screech-like barking that can pique neighbors, and Fox Terriers aren't ideal family dogs for the aforementioned reasons.
