The Weimaraner, Weimaraner Vorstehhund, Grey Ghost, and Weims are all different names for the same dog. There is a rare, longhaired variety that's not as prevalent as the shorthaired one. It has a short, shiny coat that's a mixture of silver and gray. It almost looks brown in some degree. The Weimaraner is not recommended around young children because they can knock them down inadvertently. The elderly have the same problem with them. They dislike kennels, doghouses, and loneliness. They're not fit for a lonely life. They prefer to be indoor members of the family. They respond well to praise, rewards, and various treats, but harsh punishment causes them to shy away or avoid the training time altogether.
The Weimaraner was a hunting dog that hunted bears, boar, deer, foxes, rabbits, and fowl. It's an all-around, multi-purpose hunting dog and pointer. Its talents include helping the disabled, police, and families against intruders. It can track, retrieve, point, and execute search & rescue missions. The Weimaraner is a slim, fit, strong dog with fine edges and lines. All gray colors are accepted. Its nose is also gray. It has an aristocratic bearing and a strong muzzle. The eyes are light brown, blue or gay. The ears are pendant and pretty long. The tail is docked to a very short length, 1 and 1/2 inches just 48 hours after birth. It has webbed feet amenable to swimming pools. Dogs are 24 to 27 inches high at the withers. Bitches are 22 to 25 inches high at the withers. Dogs weigh 55 to 70 pounds; bitches weigh 50 to 65 pounds. It lives about a decade. It needs experienced training to temper its wild capacities and drive for adventure. It's often very rambunctious, wily, and strong-willed. It's opinionated and energetic too.
The Weimaraner is not the best for homes because they're apt to attack felines and small prey animals because of their inborn prey instinct. They're territorial, protective, and dog aggressive. It must live indoors with the family. The dog is trained best through praise. Train it to sit, first of all. Reward it only when it sits. Never hit it. This dog needs lots of running, playtime, and brisk exercises to stay fit and functional. Temper the neuroses with plenty of exercise. These dogs are best for very active pet owners. Don't let them live outdoors, however.
The Weimaraner tends to concentrate vividly and focus with fervor. Make sure that the dog is focused on the trick you're teaching it at the moment. Don't ever strike it. They're very intelligent and often problem solve and think critically. Pet owners mention that they're just like humans in the way they think about problems. Weimaraners need plenty of companionship and exercise.
