The Portuguese Pointer is believed to have contributed to the development of many of the European gun dogs. Joao I described them in his hunting book written in the 12th century and they were present in paintings of Alfonso III in the 13th century. The Portuguese Pointer's hunting instinct is so strong that puppies often begin pointing and retrieving at two to three months with no training.
