The Brittany has qualities any dog owner would be envious of. Gentility, obedience, docility, friendliness, tenderness, and energy make it a good pick for trainers, handlers, and nice families. Reticence, however, can be the result of abuse. Nervousness, shyness, and avoidance will spring up if the dog has been under duress or strain from a bad owner previously. The dog does extremely well with children, and it should be socialized in great measure with the children during its puppy years. This produces the best results. The Brittany is often used for hunting, and this makes it more similar to a pointer, setter, or gun dog. Most people, though, call it a Spaniel. The Brittany, also referred to as the Brittany Spaniel, Epagneul Breton, and American Brittany, is a dog that's inherently malleable when it comes to training and learning how to hunt. The dog is a tireless trooper and a specialist in hunting rodents and fowl. It does well in rough, dry, or damp terrain, and it's always gentle, enthusiastic, and kind. It can become reticent if it's been roughly treated as a puppy. It adapts to any climate or kind of terrain, and it even excels in retrieving waterfowl. Partridge, Quail, Ducks, and Hare aren't safe from this companionable little friend. In the 1800's the French Brittany Province bred this dog on the pretext of hunting waterfowl. Its small stature and size make it easier to haul around, and it has characteristics of a pointer and setter. Both of these are types of gun dogs. The Brittany weighs 30 to 40 pounds, is 18 to 20 inches at the withers, and it has a brindle pattern coat with chestnut and white colors. They only live 14 to 15 years, and that's long for a dog. This dog will be up to speed on the hunt even if it lives with the family and interacts as a companion a lot of the time. The companionable traits are simply demonstrated further on the hunt. It has an average of 6 puppies to a litter, and the dogs need consistent brushing of their medium, flattened coats. They live roughly 10 to 12 years in good conditions. The Brittany invariably looks like a thinner, delicate English Springer Spaniel. Its coat is not only chestnut and white, but it may also come in liver, orange, black and white. They have ears high up on the head that droop down. They're the only Spaniels that point. They're fanatical about birds and people too. These dogs were bred to search for birds in France, namely Woodcock. It first appeared in America in 1925 after being formally recognized in 1907. This is a good dog for pointing field trials. The Brittany is a lightweight, mobile, and very friendly companion dog that’s also fanatical about searching, pointing, and roaming.

Also called Epagneul Breton.
