Portrayed in popular field and stream pictures, sporting dogs — Pointers, Retrievers, Spaniels, and Setters — have remarkable instincts in water and woods, thus, are popular for hunting (especially birds.) They are bred specifically for pointing, flushing, or retrieving game. Sporting dogs are affable around people, active and alert; they make agreeable, well-formed companions. Notably, retrievers are gentle with children exhibiting their stable temperament. They bark, but typically are not aggressive to strangers. They do require regular, stimulating exercise.
