German Spitz, Wolf Spitz, Chien Loup, and Dutch Barge Dog are the former names of the Keeshond. The Kee in Keeshond is taken from the name of a Dutch rebel that overthrew the House of Orange. The dog was his symbolic animal, and the breed became non-existent and nowhere to be found once the House was restored. Hond is simply the Dutch word that translates to dog. The commoners and forces of the rebellion took the Keeshond as their official animal during the tumultuous times of the French Revolution. Kees de Gyselaer was the rebel that led them on to battle. The Keeshond is a hero of the people. The Samoyed, Chow Chow, Elkhound, and Pomeranian went into making it. The Keeshond is a really puffy, two-layer, fluffy, silver and black dog. It is 18 inches high at the withers, and it weighs 35 to 45 pounds. They have small pointy ears, a big ruff or mane, and a very animated face. The ruff is more dominant in the males. Females do have a ruff, but it's just smaller. Interestingly, lions have manes, but lionesses do not. These dogs are very spry, jumpy, and fun-oriented. They're obedient and highly trainable, and they'll pick up all the stuff you want to teach them. They're superb retainers of information and fast learners too. The Keeshond has a great temperament. They love to comfort and cling to their owners during distress. They even sit outside rooms and wait for their owners to open up and let them in. Besides that, they're great watchdogs for people you don't want around. Even better, though, their loud bark is all the damage they can do to unsuspecting visitors. Keeshonden were used for hundreds of years in Europe to guard estates and mansions. Don't let your Keeshond become reticent because it will stymie its wonderful attitude. This is a very serious problem that arises out of too forceful lessons. Don't over-train, train harshly, or be mean during any kind of training. This dog is eager to learn, and it needs your help and structure without your angry attitude to boot. Keeshonden often resort to coming up with their own activities if they're trained to be solitary dogs. The Keeshond needs two hours of heavy brushing twice a month. It will also blow its coat a couple times during the year. The hair just totally comes off in large chunks, small chunks, and patches. It takes a little under a month to finish the blowing. You'll need a vacuum that's handy. The good news is that you bathe it just once or twice yearly. The bad news is that you have to keep the brushing to stave off the dirty dog odors of these great Keeshonds.

Also called German Wolfspitz, Wolf Spitz.
