The Japanese Chin, sometimes referred to, as the Chin or Japanese Spaniel, is a fluffy toy breed. It's really a small spaniel that’s designated as a lap dog and companion. Lap dogs can be held in the arms or rest in the lap. The dogs' ancestors came from Korea, through Japan, to China. It was in the Sechuan Province that the breed originated. Its main purpose is as a companion. Commodore Perry gave an American Naval officer it to Queen Victoria in 1853. The same man also gave it to Millard Fillmore, the U.S. President. Commodore Perry was the commander of the United States naval forces in China. These showy gifts really spearheaded the breeds' popularity.
The Japanese Chin is 8 to 11 inches at the withers, standard for a toy breed, and it is 4 to 15 pounds. The maximum reported weight was 20 pounds. Their cottony, flocculent, fleecy hair is substantive, silky, and soft. The colors always have white mixed in, but there is sometimes black, lemon, red, and light brown points, splotches, streaks, or big areas. Their feathered tails arch over their small backsides. The eyes are bulbous, gigantic, and orb-like. The facial expression is distinctly Asian. There is sometimes a big black mark in the middle forehead to delineate Buddha's mark. Buddha's thumbprint is the colloquial term for the black spot.
The Japanese Chin is known for its cat-like resemblance. It's gait, size, and temperament are cat-like. However, its most astonishing characteristic is that it washes its face with its front paws. This is mimicry of a cat if there ever was any. It doesn't yap or screech. Its bark is deep and substantial. It likes to be independent, and it’s suspicious of new people or territory. It likes its owners and environs exclusively. It doesn't like new things. They're ideal apartment dwelling pets. Grooming, brushing, and combing require a lot of work because their coats are profuse and very long. Various health problems include Luxating Patellas, heart murmurs, corneal incidents, hypoglycemia, and heart and breathing problems need to be watched out for. They wheeze, snore, and have muzzle-related issues because of flat face designs.
The Japanese Chin lives to a maximum 10-year tenure. It needs a daily walk. Its eyes and ears need to be checked on regularly and even cleaned. Its walk is noble, dignified, and fun to watch. It's a high-stepping gait. It can be taught to perform tricks like back flips, jumps, and hind leg stands. It's smart, but it's best to teach it after it's passed a certain yearlong threshold. It's reserved around people it doesn't know. Japanese Chins are known as the best toy dogs because they don't bark too much, and they're more obedient.
