The Cairn Terrier hails from the Scottish Highlands where it was used to hunt for hidden prey amongst the cairns. Cairns are just heaps of stones that are artificial set-ups used to designate burial sites, summits, path indicators, or astronomical observatories. The West Highland White Terrier is closely related. The Cairn Terrier has links to the Scottish and Skye Terriers as well. Yes, it's true. The Cairn Terrier dog that originated in the 1500's played the part of Toto in the movie, the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy's companion was ever-present as a faithful, loyal, lovable, affectionate friend. Nowadays, its use within and amongst the cairns is sparse and sporadic. However, the Cairn Terrier remains a true companion dog. The Cairn Terrier also has some utility in tracking and watching. The characteristics sought each successive litter were strong jaws and teeth, perseverance, rough weatherproof coats, and strong minds.

The Cairn Terrier was responsible for routing and snatching otters, weasels, foxes, rats, hares, and other farmhouse miscreants that devoured grains from the storehouse or wreaked havoc on garden vegetables and crops. The Cairn Terrier has evolved into an intelligent, affable, and independent dog. It enjoys and trusts company, and it will not be a nuisance to visitors. Cairn Terrier retains its independent spirit and knack for vermin hunting. It remains happy and energetic throughout its teen years, and it's long-lived at 12 to 15 years. The dog is a smart, spry, precocious, and precious little guy that has a shaggy, unkempt coat and alert, intelligent eyes. The Cairn Terrier is ready for the next big adventure at any moment, and it's always poised for a surprise or two.

The Cairn Terrier weighs 14 to 18 pounds, and it's 10 to 13 inches at the withers. It's quite a small dog. The Cairn's dense outer coat can be white, cream, fawn, tan, red, gray, brindle, or black. These headstrong dogs love to dig and chase. Their prey instincts are top-notch and still very much in force. Never use shears or scissors or instruments on the dog's coat because it can ruin the coat permanently. Dead hair can be easily removed with bare, or gloved, hands. Pull it out by the roots, and this will ensure that new hair comes in easily. There are better lap dogs because the Cairn Terrier is always up and on the move. It prefers adventure to lethargic downtime. Even though discipline is necessary to make sure the Cairn stays in line, it loathes harsh punishment. The Cairn Terrier is stubborn and self-willed, but it's sensitive as well.

The Cairn Terrier is a great dog for children because it looks over rough play and accidental pushes or grabs. However, rough play should not be intended, and even the best children need to give the dog some solitary breathing time to let it relax. A crate, kennel, or dog bed that's cordoned off from the rest of the house will work nicely. Cairn Terriers bark to relieve boredom, and they need attention and activities.
