Vendors’ definitions vary regarding small-sized dogs; it is generally accepted that dogs weighing 0-25 pounds are small dogs. Most small dogs are in the Toy dog category: Chihuahuas, Maltese, Japanese Chins, Pugs, Pomeranians, and Yorkshire Terriers, but some are in other AKC classes as well. Extra small-sized dogs under 4 pounds and 8 inches can be ambiguously termed “Teacup,” yet it isn’t universally standardized. Many small sized dogs are bred for companionship and lap pets.
