The American Hairless Terrier originated by chance from the Rat Terrier, in 1972. A completely hairless female was born in a litter of Rat Terriers. The owners then bred her and she produced one hairless female. And after several more attempts "Josephine" produced hairless male and female. These two hairless terriers were the foundation for the American Hairless Terrier.
