In 1921, a Dutch breeder named Saarloos, began a lifelong experiment to improve trainability in the German Shepherd Dog by introducing zoo-kept wolf blood. Although trainability was not significantly improved, this rare Dutch breed is easier to train and more amenable to urban life resulting in recognition of this breed in 1975, six years after Leendert Saarloos's death. It is rarely seen outside its native land, the Netherlands.
