The Pyrenean Mastiff's ancestors are the Tibetan Mastiff and the Molossian Hounds. The dogs developed between France and Spain in the Pyrenean Mountains. These dogs were used to guard flocks of sheep. Owners often protect their dogs from attack by bears and wolves, by having their dog wear a "carlanca." This is a special collar that had razor-sharp protruding spikes.
