Russian hounds were indigenous to Russia during formative European ages. This scenthound was later crossed with laikas to produce fine hare-hunting hounds with a loud, melodious bay. Selective breeding gradually changed its appearance with slight variances among Russian locales but retaining original qualities. They pursue game (hare or fox) with a keen sense of smell, great persistence and endurance. Hunters identify their dogs from afar by their bass, baritone, tenor, alto or high-pitched treble bays.
