The Rhodesian Ridgeback is also called the Ridgeback, Lion Dog, African Lion Dog, Van Rooyen's Lion Dog, or African Lion Hound. The many references to Lions in their colloquially sounding names suggest involvement with the King of the Jungle. In fact, they're used to annoy and hold back Lions so that the hunter can get a good shot and have a clean kill. Pet owners must know that they dislike rough play, taunting, or any kind of annoyance. However, their gentle, kind nature wouldn't suggest sensitivities to pestering. Their cunning savagery and wild barbarity on the hunt speak nothing of their sweet domestic traits. Its name, Ridgeback, is clearly attributable to the ridge of hair running along their back in the opposite direction.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a hound that hails from Southern Africa, i.e., Cape Colony. Pioneers created it out of local ridged hunting dogs. Dogs are 25 to 27 inches high at the withers, and bitches are 24 to 26 inches high at the withers. Dogs weigh 80 to 90 pounds, and bitches weigh 65 to 75 pounds. They live a decade to 12 years. They're hardy, climate-ready dogs that need a daily, brisk walk. They're ready for all kinds of temperatures. It has a wheaten coat. They're intelligent, protective, loyal, and independent. These dogs hunted in Rhodesia for so long that their name changed. Lions feared this dog. It has a long head, flat skull, and broad muzzle. It has shimmering, lighted eyes that shine. Its tail curves and tapers slightly upward. It’s muscular and quite large. It’s the only dog with a ridge up its back. It can withstand Africa’s temperature extremes. It has ears that hang down and taper off at the edge to a rounded point.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a watchdog, running & jogging companion, and guard dog. It will not welcome strangers right away. It needs time to warm up to strangers. It was derived from crosses of the European colonists' dogs and the local Hottentot hunting dogs in the 19th century. Grooming requires a weekly brushing or even less to maintain its smooth, short coat. It needs a lot of exercise.
Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe on the map. It can hunt bears, antelope, leopards, and gazelles. It’s very frugal on water too. It doesn’t need to consume a lot of it. It needs to have lots of socialization and obedience training early on to prevent aggression later on. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is ranked 54th in popular appeal. This dog will often try to find out its place in the family structure. It’s a pack dog by nature. The Rhodesian Ridgebacks are wild and remotely fierce hounds.
