The Shetland Sheepdog is also called the Shetland Collie, Dwarf Scotch Shepherd, Toonie Dog, Apartment Collie, Miniature Collie, and most of all, Sheltie dog. Many of the names are obsolete except for the first and last. It's a very small sheepdog specifically bred for the Shetland Isles region off the coast of Scotland. Delightful, graceful, fluid, nimble, and obedient are elements this dog is prized for. Their intelligence is akin to the Border Collie. Some handlers profess that they have an intelligence that's unbecoming of a dog and more fitting of a human. Its caveats to companion coolness include persistent, sometimes incessant barking, and a love and zeal for chasing things, especially cars. Sometimes this results in the dog's death. It shows wariness toward strangers, but it has a sweet, deep attachment for its owners. The Shetland Sheepdog was used in Great Britain for herding sheep. It weighs 20 to 25 pounds, and it's 13 to 16 inches at the withers. It was first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1911. Some people label it as a small Collie. The coat colors range in color from sable, blue merle, black, white, and tan. It's a long, flowing coat with a coarse, rough outer coat and a silky, short undercoat. They have a scissors bite, wedge-shaped head, almond-colored eyes, and they're reserved, shy, and reticent around strangers and unwelcome visitors. They have a hyper attitude around the family, and they're always on the go and looking for something to do. They're willing and eager to please, obey, and play. Small children can hurt the dogs accidentally so close parental supervision is a requirement. The Shetland Sheepdog is a herding dog bred for solely for working, functional traits. It excels at animal movement shepherding, stamina, endurance, tenacity, perseverance, leaping, running, nipping, barking, and direct eye contact with the large animals. These are only its herding qualities. It's also used in droving, police work, tracking, as a seeing guide dog, search & rescue, and military dog. Their energy reserves, ambition, and intelligence are used in these high-octane tasks. The Shetland Sheepdog came from the Shetland Isles that are nestled in between Scotland and Norway. This small, hearty, rugged dog is suited to the climate of the Shetland Isles. They're not far from the Arctic Circle. Vegetation is limited, the growing season is nil, and the terrain is harsh and rugged. The dog has a double-coat for weather repellent purposes and insulation against harsh winters. It eats very little, and that's suitable for its size. The Shetland Sheepdog is probably a descendant of the Border Collie. Shetland Sheepdogs need to be brushed a couple times a week or else it will develop mats in problem areas around the ears, limbs, joints, and other hard-to-access places.
