No one knows what type of dog the Schipperke is, and you couldn't tell by looking at it. It's all black by the way. Some call it a Spitz, others a Terrier, others a Sheepdog, and some call it unknowable. It lacks a tail, and the American Kennel Club only accepts black as the purebred color. However, tan, fawn, yellow, and brown often show up on this dog. Watchful, wary, alert, and territorial define this breed. A lot of people believe the dog is born tailless because docking has become so common and ubiquitous. The tail will come up and curve over the dog's back if its unaltered or docked at birth. In this way, it resembles a Spitz. It has a fox-like face, and it’s a watchdog and a hunter. It has an alert, curious, and mischievous expression. The Schipperke, pronounced “sheep-er-kee”, has a ruff of black hair around its neck. The ruff trails to the very back of the dog, at the rear end. Rensenns, a canal boat captain, bred it in Flanders. The first Schipperke show was in 1690, and it was probably the first ever dog show.
The Schipperke is probably descended from a black sheepdog of Belgium called the Leauvenaar. It’s supposedly a faithful, loyal watchdog, and its name translates to “little captain”. It has small, erect, perky ears that sit high atop the head. It has a diminutive, black nose. The dog is sometimes referred to as a Dutch dog, but it came from Flanders. They do well with felines and canines in the house. It’s a double-coated dog. Interestingly, Schipperkes were used in WWII to carry messages between resistance cells. They were very popular with members of the working class. Schipperkes are highly photogenic.
The Schipperke enjoys a good bark, howl, or succession of noises. They live over 15 years. Some reach 18 years of age. They’re 10 to 13 inches high at the withers, and they weigh a dozen to 18 pounds. It enjoys running freely around a fenced yard. These little skippers chased and killed rats on the canal boats, and it also guarded the canal boats. It’s a good watch dog because of its loud barking mechanism. They are rated very highly as working dogs and intelligent dogs. They’re prone to sit beside sick family members. These dogs cannot handle sedentary lifestyles. A fenced yard is barely sufficient for it.
The Schipperke won’t back down against intruders. It’s extremely active indoors. It can be a hassle to housebreak it. Needless to mention, it requires a long, daily walk outdoors. Without it, it can become sad and neurotic. This dog is a multi-purpose, funny-looking friend that’s smart as a whip. Schipperkes are great companions on boating and fishing trips.
