The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an ancient breed dating as far back as the 800's. Vikings imported them into Wales. Corgi is the Celtic word for dog. Cardigans don't like to spread out their loyalty too thin. Their affection is usually relegated to one or two masters. It was originally used for herding cattle, and his low, long stature helped him avoid the kicks from cattle. The breed nips and barks at heels, of each other and of cattle, to control, move, herd, and stimulate their targets. It's also used as a farm guard dog and a rodent assailant. In fact, their first job was farm guarding, but cattle droving took dominance over their affairs. They were originally in high concentration in Cardiganshire, Wales, which explains their current name. The "Cor" portion of the word translates directly to dwarf. The "gi" portion translates to dog. It was discovered in the rolling, misty hills of Cardiganshire, Wales. The dog has similar traits to the Dachshund, to which it is related.
Welsh laws exacted penalties for Cardigan Welsh Corgi robbers because the dog was endemic to a family's economic status. Yard-long, farm dogs had many uses - outside of cattle herding. Vivacious, obedient Corgis are frequent movie stars. They stand off from strangers until they're more acclimated to them. They're deeply involved in their family's fun activities, and the family will leap for joy at the sight of the joyful, energetic, devoted Corgi. This breed became distinct from the Pembroke Welsh Corgi in 1934, according to the American Kennel Club.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi lives from 12 to 17 years, weighs between 30 and 38 pounds for males and between 25 and 34 pounds for females, and they have long tails. Some tails are misleadingly cut off, or docked. The coat color varies between possible combinations of red, sable, brindle, black, and blue merle. It's a dog that's over 3,000 years old. They love the companionship and interaction of other dogs and cats. They originally herded cattle or sheep all day and then came into the home at night to relax with the family. The dog has gigantic ears in relation to the rest of its body and head. They're geared to distinguish and dissect incoming sounds. They're so acute that they can pick up on the incoming kick from a cow and slide out of the way. Their small stature helps them roll over quickly and avoid the kick. They're great cattle drovers. The dog has low-hanging ears that pick up and become erect after puppyhood ends at 8 weeks. Housebreaking is recommended with the use of a crate. Don't be overbearing because Cardigan Welsh Corgis need to please and will be offended and hurt by harsh tones.
