Herding Dogs
Historically, herding dogs were used to gather livestock or hunt strays in unapproachable places with handler guidance. Border Collies, Australian Shepherds and Cattle dogs were commonly crossbred with other breeds for specialization. Today, some breeders desire to preserve the working talents and abilities of herding breeds. Many kinds of competitive trials are aimed at demonstrating their characteristics: ability to move animals with handler cooperation, initiative and judgment, gentle workmanship, and firmness with stubborn animals.
