The Newfoundland, Newf, or Newfie, as some say, is a humongous, black dog with a funny countenance. It was recently a movie star in the movie, Babe. This breed was used in hauling, retrieving, carrying, carting, backpacking, and rescuing people. Some say Indians, others Vikings, brought it and others say that Tibetan Mastiffs bred with local stock to produce the unique-looking Newfoundland breed. Some say it's a relative of the Labrador. After all, Labrador and Newfoundland are geographically close to one another. Many people owe their lives to this handsome breed. It was awarded medals and merit for its exploits during two World Wars. It is a companion with character and remarkable physical traits that render it super memorable. Barely any dogs have the funny long-faced countenance that this one does. The Newfoundland is an immense working dog that can carry more weight than any other dog. It's 27 to 29 inches at the withers for males, and it's 25 to 27 inches for females. These dogs have a wide weight variable between 100 and 220 pounds. Its water-repellent coat comes in black, black & white, and brown. Unlike other dogs, it only has a few coat variations. Landseer is the technical, standard name of the black coat variety with white markings. It has small eyes and little pendant ears, and it has webbed feet to help it swim. It's a poor guard dog, but it's a great watchdog. It loves to swim in the water, and it often makes a mess of its drinking water bowl too. The drinking water bowl will often go sliding around the floor. Speaking of wet things, it drools considerably. Their dense coats are flat, wavy, and oily. The Newfoundland is noted for being one of the most loyal dogs there is. Sometimes, it has trouble moving to a new home with its owner because it becomes attached to where it lives. Their dopey, huge faces and frames are incredibly appealing and endearing. Lord Byron remarked that they were virtuous. Many people feel that they're like humans in mannerisms and virtues. It will not fight or attack, but it will perceive a dangerous situation and place itself in front of its owners. They're noble, dignified, stately, powerful, gentle, and devoted. It loves the outdoors, and it's a babysitter of sorts. It eats about as much as Golden Retriever once it's matured. These dogs need companionship or else they wither. It lives 9 to 15 years. Its average lifespan is 10 years. The Newfoundland requires weekly brushing of both coats with a hard, capable brush. Don't bathe unless strictly required because the precious oils will be taken off. Use dry shampoo instead. It sheds in the Spring and Fall. Newfoundlands like cool climates.
