This breed was named for the area in which it originated, which is Karelia, the territory from north of St.Petersburg to Finland. The Finnish people have never mixed the Karelian Bear Dog with any other breed of dog. They are very social, outside hunting dogs and have been used to hunt elk, bear and other large game. They are extremely loyal to their master and love their people.
