The Piccolo Levriero Italiano and acronym, IG, are two common names for the Italian Greyhound, a sight hound toy breed. The fossilized remains of what appears to be an Italian Greyhound were unearthed in the vast complex of an Egyptian tomb that was over 6,000 years old. Royalty from Russia, Denmark, England, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Rome, Egypt, Phoenicia, and Africa were taken by the breeds' elegance, look, and temperament. Its popularity in Italy exclusively gave it the current name. Their very short coats require barely any grooming procedures, but their teeth need regular brushing to avoid dental maladies. Their delicate jawbones leave them susceptible to periodontal disease. Their extremely abbreviated coats call for an occasional bath. They look just like a miniature Greyhound. Make sure that children don't hurt the dog's frame because of its fragility. Its older cousin, the Greyhound, goes about 20 mph faster at top speed. The Italian Greyhound's maximum speed is 25 mph. Selective breeding has produced a smaller, fine-boned version of the Greyhound. However, distinct genetic lines for the IG go back a couple of thousand years.
The Italian Greyhound weighs 6 to 11 pounds, and it's 12 to 16 high at the withers. There are two designated weight classes. The first has a maximum weight of 8 pounds. The second is over 8 pounds. Because of its weight classification, it's a toy breed. However, the elongated, arched, slender bodies take up more space, voluminously and visually. They have a far-reaching neck, longish legs, a broad chest, pointed muzzle, curvilinear and bowed back, scissors bite, slightly elliptical tail, and it has a fancy-free, high-stepping gait. It has pitch black, spirited, emphatic eyes and light ears that fold along the head. Its coat comes in many colors. Gray, cream, red, fawn, black, blue, slate gray, coal, tan, chestnut, and light brown are some of its colors. There are often white markings or splotches throughout the coat, especially on the underside and feet. It is prone to broken bones during its first year or two. Watch that it doesn't endure rough play from immature children or assaults from other dogs. Even inadvertent slips can hurt the dog's fragile, yet elegant, skeletal structure.
The Italian Greyhound has health problems in a large list. They include epilepsy, hip degeneration, Von Willebrand's disease, PRA, color dilution alopecia, cataracts, liver shunts, periodontal disease, and hypothyroidism. Get a veterinarian to screen prospective dogs for inherited genetic problems. Get a full profile from the breeder on the parents of the IG you're getting.
The Italian Greyhound has a lot of fun facts associated with it. It likes sweaters in cold weather because it can hardly stand the cold temperatures. They live 12 to 15 years. They need simple rubdowns to keep them well groomed and in shape. Baths should be given sparsely. They were prized in smart societies like Renaissance Italy and Ancient Egypt. They were used as hunting dogs throughout history, but their primary use has been relegated to companionship and friendship. Queen Anne, Victoria, Catherine, and Maud were all queens with Italian Greyhounds.
