The Berger de Picard is named for the Picardie region in northeast France and is possibly one of the oldest French shepherd dogs. French shepherds preferred a herding dog with a strong protective instinct to protect their herds in the vast, unenclosed grazing areas. The Berger de Picard has a distinctive rough coat nicely suited for herding.
