The Basset Hound, like the Bloodhound, is a scent hound. Its ears are unduly long, have a texture akin to velvet, and can even reach to the tip of the nose when folded forward. This is no easy task because the muzzle extends quite long. The Basset Hound ears are about 12 inches long to the naked eye. The Basset Hound has a higher bone ratio than any other dog. Basset Hounds have more bone mass, in proportion to the rest of its body, than any other breed. The French origin of the name means either low or quite low. Hound, is, of course, just a catchall for dogs that aid hunters by chasing or tracking animals. These are in contrast to gun dogs because they are mostly good at finding the prey after it's been shot.

The diminutive, lowly, small, miniature scenthoud we all know as the Basset Hound derives it prefix, Basset, from a couple French words that mean low or rather low. It’s runner-up to the Bloodhound in terms of its scent tracking abilities. The Basset Hound weights between 50 and 65 pounds, and its 12 to 15 inches in height. It has a small, coarse, rough, glossy coat. Stocky legs, humongous feet, and sunken, droopy eyes make this Basset Hound a fun dog to look at. Some dogs are rather generic in appearance and countenance, but the Basset Hound is not one of them. A characteristic brown, tan, and white tricolor coat is most often observed in Basset Hounds. A prominent white tail should be upturned so that hunters can spot it through the heavy, dense thickets and brush. The Basset Hound low stature is confusing because they're quite long, and they can reach onto countertops with their impressive standing height.

The French created this breed, the Basset Hound, from the St. Hubert's Hound. The dogs were well known in the 16th century. Basset Hounds were bred to be able to track small varmints like rabbits and squirrels underneath the thick brush. Therefore, Basset Hounds were bred to be very low to the ground. Their ability rests in tracking and trailing. They're not breeds that would kill prey. The Basset Hound dogs are susceptible to ear problems because their ears trail on the ground with lots of germs. It whines or lightly mumbles whining chatter that sounds like a human talking. It does this to beckon its master for food or treats. It will howl during an emergency or impending weather changes too. Basset Hounds are difficult to train and housebreak. Basset Hounds respond best to treat rewards, but the training might prove short lasting if the treat is not given too. The Basset Hound likes to listen with their big ears; they like to take really long walks and use their sense of smell, if possible. Basset Hounds are not bundles of energy, but they use their endurance and stamina on very long treks. Basset Hounds are pack animals that need other pets to be excited when left alone by their masters at home.
