There are numerous hypotheses concerning the beginnings of the Auvergne Pointer. One theory is that the Auvergne Pointer dog was developed as a regional breed and came from ancient French pointers. Others believe that the knights of Malta brought the Auvergne Pointer breed to Auvergne. Regardless of the ancient history, it is known that the Auvergne Pointer breed was established as a distinct breed in the late 1700s. This Auvergne Pointer breed was near extinction during World War II and is still rare today.
