The American Eskimo Dog is a fond companion dog, and it represents reliability, flexibility, brilliance, and beauty. The American Eskimo Dog is a miniature to medium-size dog of Nordic origin, and it's universally white, or white with a hue of biscuit-colored cream. This American Eskimo Dog breed is compact, level, and substantive in spirit and stature. American Eskimo Dogs have a lively, comfortable gait. It has alert, perky, triangular ears and marked black points on its lips, nose, and around its eyes. It has a pure white double coat with a short undercoat. The American Eskimo Dog has a thick, straight, smooth outer coat too. It has a lion's ruff around its neck and chest that is seen on females and males together. The lower part of the dog and its lower legs are covered with the same thick, long hair. It has breeches. The American Eskimo Dog has a plumed, elaborate tail.

The American Eskimo Dog miniature version is 11 to 15 inches high at the withers, and it weighs between 10 and 20 pounds. The standard height at the withers is 16 to 21 inches, and its standard weight is 19 to 35 inches. The American Eskimo Dog lives 10 to 15 or more years with proper feeding, exercise, and good care. It can live up to two decades or even longer. The litter size is 2 to 4 puppies for the miniature version, and its 4 to 6 puppies for the standard version. The American Eskimo Dog is a Spitzen dog. Some of its health problems include hip dysplasia, elbow and knee degeneration, progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, cataracts, allergies, fleas, and hot spots. These dogs can jump really high up in the air, but they need constant exercise and mental challenges and stimulation or else they'll end up with behavioral problems that are no fun for anyone. This American Eskimo Dog requires an active owner to take part in the dog's life every day.

The American Eskimo Dog has brown eyes, its length is a little bit longer than its height, and the muzzle is longish. The feathered tail is a beautiful sight to behold. Its prick ears, insulating double coat, and attitude are all endearing parts of this beautiful dog. Many people purchase American Eskimo Dogs as puppies, but they no longer want them once they're adult dogs that shed constantly.

The American Eskimo Dog, also called the Eskie, needs consistent grooming and brushing once weekly. Regular brushing can help with their shedding. Twice yearly, American Eskimo Dogs shed their entire coats. This is called a coat "blow". They do this at the onset of Summer and Winter in May or June and November or December. Don't shave the dog because it helps with their skin. It can prevent sunburn. American Eskimo Dogs like cold climates, but they can withstand humid ones too. They have super dry skin, and they need to be bathed every two to three months. American Eskimo Dogs regularly groom themselves.

Also called Standard American Eskimo Dog.
