The Samoyed derives its name from the Samoyedic people group in Siberia. It's also been called the Samoiedskaia Sabaka, Samoyedskaya, Bjelkier, Sami, and Sammy. It's an all-white dog with a fluffy coat, upturned tail, and a characteristic smile. These dogs were purely functional in origin. Breeders were nomads that hunted Reindeer and other game. These dogs were warm and fluffy so they slept on top of the hunters at night. They also herded and pulled heavy carts and sleds. It's rare to find an irritable, angry, aggressive, or destructive Samoyed. They don't lose their childish banter or happy buoyancy as they age either. Its life expectancy is 12 to 16 years. Nourish them well and get good veterinary care. They’ll last well into their teen years. The Siberian hunters and fisherman, called the Samoyeds, used this breed for centuries. In 1889, it was brought to Europe for breeding and to be used as a sole companion. Many of its working traits aren’t put to full effect today.
The Samoyed is a working dog. Its working dog traits need to be mimicked daily. They don’t need to be mirrored because many working dogs no longer retain their specific talents, like pulling carts and sleds. However, without the daily dose of exercising, it can become irritable, gain weight, and become aggressive. Some might act like escape artists and try to dash out to exercise. The Samoyed dogs are 21 to 24 inches high at the withers. Females are a few inches less at 19 to 21 inches high at the withers. Male dogs come in at a hefty 45 to 65 pounds, and female dogs come in at 35 to 50 pounds. Hip Dysplasia, Diabetes, and Skin allergies are commonly seen.
The Samoyed has a variable personality. Puppies develop into serious or carefree dogs. There’s no set norm for these dogs, although many of them smile quite frequently. It has a fox-like face, heavy coat, and spirited personality in most instances. It’s bright and affable to everyone. It likes to make friends. Dogsled racing is usually relegated to Alaskan Huskies, but this breed can perform it. Herding is the same story. Australian Shepherds and Border Collies are great herders, but this dog can do it in a pinch. They’re often called “Smiley Dogs”. Etah was the name of the Samoyed that first reached the South Pole with Roald Amundsen.
The Samoyed has some concerns like too much barking, shedding, chasing, jumping, and exercise needs. You’ll be vacuuming all over your house unless the sight of lots of dead hair doesn’t bother you or your family. They’re high-pitched barkers with loud, piercing yaps that can disturb neighbors. Don’t let them stay outside without any supervision. Samoyeds are not for people that like calm, placid, indoor dogs.
