This breed was developed to toll, lure, or retrieve waterfowl in the early 19th century. First, the dog would retrieve a ball or stick close to shore in hopes this would provoke curiosity in the ducks offshore. Once lured within gunshot range, the hunters could take action. Finally, the dogs would retrieve the downed ducks. This breed is the smallest of the retrievers, nonetheless it is strong and agile.
