The Norwegian Elkhound is sometimes referred to as the Norsk Elghund Gra or Norsk Elghund Sort in the native tongue. This dog is one of the most ancient breeds, and it's a Spitz-type as well. Norway has memorialized it as the dog of the nation. Blistering cold, subzero extreme weather, rugged mountainous terrain, and dense forests only invigorate this breed more. Well, it's not to say that it doesn't enjoy some quiet time by the warm fire. It was bred to guard, protect, herd, and help. It's a dog bred for function, and Norway has some temperatures and vocations that call for such a dog. This dog predates most weapons. It lived during the early B.C. period of 5,000 B.C. It was used to hunt game as large as the Moose and Elk. It can hunt almost anything though. The dog can track prey by their smell over several miles. Once it finds it, it barks and yaps and keeps it in sight until the hunter arrives to kill it. This is not so barbaric because many people in cold climates, or any climates, hunt large game to feed their families.
The Norwegian Elkhound is a rough American translation of "Norsk Elghund", meaning "Norwegian Moose Dog". The Norwegian Elkhound was actually used to hunt moose. It would dart, bounce, and jump up around the moose to keep it from running until the hunters could shoot it. The people of Scandinavia to hunt bears and wolves also used it. In essence, this was a useful dog with deep historic roots in hunter-gatherer tribes and villages. They're outside dogs by nature, and they become destructive without sufficient daily exercise. They're suited to cold climates and lots of snow.
The Norwegian Elkhound has a medium-build, loads of stamina, and a square frame. Its muzzle, ears, and tail tip are black. It has a silver and gray coat that's lighter on the underside. It has powerful jaws with a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark brown to black with an amiable expression. This dog has no smell or unpleasant odor. Males are 19 to 21 inches high at the withers, and females are 18 to 20 inches high at the withers. Females weigh 40 to 55 pounds, and males weigh 50 to 60 pounds.
The Norwegian Elkhound is courageous and amiable. It loves its owners' children. It's a guard dog that loves to greet its owners with enthusiasm. It has a peaked, loud bark that can get its owners running for intruders. It has a strong desire to hunt, and it will often run through many obstacles to get its quarry. It's not a hound dog, and it can't hunt, as a hound is apt to. Norwegian Elkhounds are loyal to their packs, and so they're great family dogs.
