The Neapolitan Mastiff is thought to have descended from the mastiffs that Alexander the Great regarded so highly in Greece. It is doubtful that there is any other breed of dog whose fundamental characteristics have remained as constant over the centuries. Despite the beastly and even vicious appearance, the Neapolitan Mastiff is a peaceful and steady dog. It was developed to look and act fearsome when needed, but is affectionate with its family.
