Breeders created the Moscow Watchdog after World War II. They wanted a dog that would be receptive to their commands, yet still a large and powerful watchdog. They used the Caucasian Ovtcharka and the Saint Bernard. This crossing gave them a dog with the traits they were looking for. Today, this breed is very popular in Eastern Europe, but rarely known elsewhere.
