There is an American, English, Spanish, Tibetan, Neopolitan, and Bullmastiff. Mastiff generally refers to English Mastiff, when used alone. The Mastiff is a Molosser dog. The Mastiff, by far the oldest British breed, was recorded as early as the 6th century B.C. in the area. The dogs were present during the Romans' invasion of the region. The Romans used them in bull, bear, and animal fighting in the arenas. Thus, it was a gladiator dog. When the UK banned the baiting of animals, the dog lost virtually all its following in Great Britain. Its survival in America ensured its long-term success. Traders, maybe Phoenician traders, on their long journeys, probably brought it to Britain. "Masty" simply means powerful. The dog is hulk-like and powerful indeed. If a tiger is akin to a cat, then a Mastiff is similar to a dog. The Mastiff is the largest dog breed. Coupled with their large, symmetrical size is a sweet, slobbery temperament.
The Mastiff is roughly 27 inches high at the withers for bitches and 30 inches high for males. Males weigh between 160 and 230 pounds, and females weigh between 140 to 190 pounds. Of course, weights can and do exceed the maximums listed here. Many are over 300 pounds. This dog is square-shaped, and it is bulky, powerful, and hefty from any viewing angle. The black coloring around the eyes, nose, muzzle, and ears is seen on all dogs, despite their coat color. The coat color is often cream, but it can come in fawn, apricot, and brindle. If it's brindle, then either fawn or apricot should the main color, and dark stripes should be seen throughout. The Mastiff has an outer coat that is course, rough, and picayune. Its undercoat is dense, sparse, and short.
The Mastiff lives about 10 to 12 years. The dog is generally lethargic. It requires little exercise to maintain its health and happiness. Take it on at least one daily walk to keep it fit. Health conditions that can reduce life quality are hip dysplasia, ectropion, bloat, CHD, gastric torsion, PPM, vaginal hyperplasia, elbow dysplasia, PRA, and cardiomyopathy. The Mastiff has a temperament that is dignified, grand, and calm. It is a stately gentleman with a powerful gait and wide frame. The Mastiff has many talents that watching, guarding, military activities, police activities, and search & rescue. These dogs snore, wheeze, and drool, but they're funny to look at. The Mastiff is a docile, gentle, patient, and steady, steadfast dog with children and its owners alike. It is a great protector of its territory and family, and it will guard against visitors unless the handler lets them in. Its natural instinct is to protect, not attack. Early training and socialization will make this dog friendlier around other dogs. Because of its large size, it should not be present around small children or taken off a leash at the dog park. Mastiffs require a monthly bath, firm bristle brushing, and clipping in certain spots.
