The Greyhound can reach a top speed of close to 45 mph in under a few seconds. It was bred for coursing game, racing, and to be a companion. A curved spine, well-defined contours, an aerodynamic, sleek build, and a voluminous, deep chest make this breed especially good for racing. The Greyhound, or English Greyhound, is a distant relative of herding dogs, and it's a sight hound itself. They were probably in existence in the 5th and 6th centuries B.C., but no one can be certain. Nomads valued them because the tribes and families were hunter-gatherers that put them to great use. The dog is not gray predominately, although the Deerhound and Wolfhound are. Gentle, graceful, and friendly are traits of this dog that’s thousands of years old. The average Greyhound will chase anything that breathes. Even inanimate objects aren't free of a Greyhound's sights.
The Greyhound might chase and kill domestic cats too. Children aren't good companions because the dogs loathe rough play. They're placid and lethargic indoors. Some might say they're even-tempered, civil, and mild-mannered creatures when inside. Don't let them around quick-moving prey, especially ex-racing ones, because they're prone to chase and kill. Luckily, barking is nil to none, and they form close bonds with their masters. They're related to the Saluki, and that's a dog that goes back more than 5,000 years. Greyhounds are one of the fastest land animals. Their top speed can be reached in a couple of strides so they're a marvel as well as a speedster. These dogs are prized for their speed and their looks.
The Greyhound is 28 to 30 inches high for males, and bitches are 27 to 28 inches high. They weigh 65 to 70 pounds, and bitches weigh 60 to 65 pounds. They're prone to bloat so feed them very small meals throughout the day. Over-feeding could produce gastric torsion, and gastric torsion often leads to fatal consequences. There are several dozen-coat patterns. Among them are white, brindle, tan, fawn, black, coal, red, blue-gray, and splotchy looks. They live around 10 to 12 years. Their short coat needs a good daily brushing. Greyhounds have to be kept on a leash unless they're in a fenced yard because they'll often chase cats or cars and get into accidents or hurt innocent wayfaring pets.
The Greyhound needs 20 to 30 minutes of walking outdoors each day. They're friendly with visitors, and they're pack animals. The pack animal distinction is important because the owner will take the place of alpha male in the pack. Therefore, they'll listen to the master well. Greyhounds are couch potatoes if you leave them inside, and that's interesting because of the sharp contrast with their top speed outdoors.
