Golden Retrievers have cream or yellowish coats. The dog is one of the most popular family pets at this time. Registrations for Golden Retrievers are staggering. The Golden Retriever was bred because of vast improvements in firearms that made the pointers and retrievers of the time obsolete. A specialty gun dog, so named the Golden Retriever, set out to fill this void. They soon displaced the Flat-Coated Retriever, and in 1913, the first official club took formation for Golden Retrievers. The Golden Retriever Club had an inception. Its roots go back to Scotland. The Golden Retriever breed is thought to be friendly toward all strangers, and it is generally safe to be around if it's unattended by its master. Serious aggression or anger is unacceptable to the standard sweet, kind temperament of the Golden Retriever breed.
The Golden Retriever males have a height of between 22 and 24 inches, and females come in at 20 to 22 inches at the withers. Males weigh between 60 to 80 pounds, and females are approximately 5 to 10 pounds less at 55 to 70 pounds. Golden Retrievers do all right in small apartments, but they really need a fenced yard to keep them in top shape and spirits. They're prone to hip dysplasia, cancer, elbow dysplasia, cataracts, skin allergies, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, distichiasis, retinal dysplasia, corneal dystrophy, heart problems and joint diseases. Many of the diseases are relatively rare, but cancer kills about 60% of all Golden Retrievers. A meaty raw food diet advocated by Weston A. Price will stave off the majority of cancers. They live 10 to 13 years, but many Golden Retrievers have genetic problems caused by improper breeders.
The Golden Retriever is prone to obesity more than other dogs so it needs to be treated like a person and get an average of 30 minutes a day of exercise. Besides being fantastic family adornments, Golden Retrievers excel in hunting, narcotics detection, agility, tricks, and a good swim or fetch game. You can't count on Golden Retrievers to be house guards, but they're great at barking when a stranger approaches. Golden Retrievers live to please their masters, and swimming is one of their fondest activities.
The Golden Retriever can sometimes be mahogany color. It looks kind of red, and show dog enthusiasts do not permit this. Judges will disqualify reddish retrievers. The coat can darken or lighten as the dog ages. Whatever color it turns, the Golden Retriever will retain its characteristic kind, sweet countenance and demeanor. It's known for its hallmark kindness.
The Golden Retriever loves to retrieve anything. Frisbees, balls, sticks, and other objects are a Golden Retriever's best friends. Golden Retrievers enjoy the activity for several hours, especially in the water. Therefore, Golden Retrievers are great dogs to keep for island properties, lake houses, and beachfront homes.
