The Chinese Shar-Pei is also called the Shar Pei, for short. Some refer to it as the Chinese Fighting Dog, and it originated in the Chinese countryside. It was used to guard livestock, hunt varmints, and watch over the family. It looks as if it has sand-like skin. The puppy is born with tons of wrinkles, but the dog fills up the skin over time, and the wrinkles diminish. The dog has been depicted in ancient pottery, over 2,000 years old. The hanging, loose, and pointy, prickly skin was bred into it to help it win dogfights. The opponent dog had trouble grabbing hold of it. It shares a deep blue or purple tongue with the Chow Chow, suggesting a relationship. Even if the dog is grabbed the loose skin flaps and folds, it can still rotate its head and sting its assailant with its own bite. It is a wonderful guard for the whole family because it will protect them at any cost. They live between 8 to 12 years, need daily exercise like walking, and they don't do well with temperature excesses or deficiencies. It should be fed a diet low in protein with vegetables and fruits included. It is prone to digestive maladies like food allergies and poor digestion. Don't let it have preservatives.
The Chinese Shar-Pei, in recent DNA studies, confirmed its title as one of the oldest dog breeds. At a time in the past, it was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being ultra-rare. However, since a Hong Kong businessman rescued the breed and put advertisements in dog magazines for American help, the breed has proliferated. It used to be exorbitantly and outrageously expensive, but its now just as cheap as any purebred dog. It is known for hunting wild game like pigs and other edible varmints. It has a wide range of uses that made it so valuable to the Chinese farm workers. The breed was almost lost during the transition to Communism, but a Hong Kong breeder and businessman saved the breed from disappearance and obscurity.
The Chinese Shar-Pei was used for guarding in the United States, but it was also used for fighting in China. There are more than 100,000 Chinese Shar-Peis in the world today. People often purchase them because of their appearance and rich history. It's not friendly to strangers, and it may act standoffish and cautious. Crate training is a good way to train it, and this dog definitely needs early socialization to cull out its bad qualities. The tongue is also known to be black. It has a coat with many colors that include possible ones from the following list: black, slate, coal, cream, fawn, fawn, ginger, sable, apricot, chocolate, blue, and chestnut. Chinese Shar-Peis snore, snort, and have mouth and nose issues like all short-faced breeds, Pugs included.
