The Chinese Crested Dog is sometimes called the Hairless or Powder Puff. Each refers to a variety present in most litters. This toy dog loves to entertain, and its look is remarkable. In the former version, the Hairless, the dog reveals all its skin except for the hairy head, tail, and feet. The Powder Puff has a lot of flowing hair. It always puzzles breeders that both come in the same litter. You can forget unpleasant odors, ticks, and fleas, and say goodbye with this breed because they're not prone to them. The dog originally came from Africa. The Aztec tribal group used them to warm the bed and make tasty meals with. Chinese boats picked them in their stops along the African coast, and they were really good at finding and killing rats aboard the ships. It weighs 5 to 13 pounds, and its height ranges from 11 to 13 inches. Hairlessness is the dominant trait. Therefore, hairless and powderpuff dogs are often siblings. It's a treat to guess at how many of each kind are going to be present in a single litter. Unfortunately, a hairless Chinese Crested Dog was awarded the World's Ugliest Dog title. The dog is already somewhat troublesome to look at. However, this one, a certain Sam, had cataracts, dental deformities, and tons of wrinkles. The Chinese Crested Dog is sometimes called a smiling chum with tendencies of squeaking and screeching. It gets along well with most families. Their frank candor, lap-sitting trait, and happy-go-lucky demeanor are appealing. Some males can get irritable as they get older. However, this isn't any different than humans. Most Chinese Cresteds are happy with everyone; some show preferential feelings for the members of the family that put it at ease and make it feel secure. Frequent grooming is required for both varieties. The breed goes back 800 or more years in China, and it originated in Africa. It's closely related, genetically, to the Basenji. It's been called the Chinese Edible Dog, Chinese Hairless Dog, Chinese Ship Dog, and Chinese Royal Dog. It found its way to Europe in the 1800's. Traders brought it to ports from Africa. Keep the hairless kind out of hot sun and snow. It doesn't fare well. The Chinese Crested Dog is never mean. It's spry, vibrant, and fun to be around. It thrives in small apartments with no need for a yard outdoors. It's not related to the Mexican Hairless Dog according to genetics. Its favorite hobbies are climbing and digging. It doesn't bark too often, and that's a plus. It also doesn't suffer from some congenital maladies that other toy dogs are susceptible to. It has a range of its own problems though. It's a mid-level watchdog that's not great for the task. There are other toy breeds that do better because they bark incessantly at the slightest change or noise. Chinese Crested Dogs are fun to own, but they're also fun to show off to curious people.
