The Boston Terrier, Boston Bull, Round-headed Terrier, Bullet Head, and Boston Bull Terrier reference the same breed. This compact dog with erect, perky ears originated in the United States of America. Its first public appearance in 1870 in Boston spawned the Boston Bull Terrier Club. It was later renamed the Boston Terrier Club at the behest of a popular writer named James Watson. In 1893, the American Kennel Club recognized it officially. A French Bulldog, Old English Bulldog, and English White Terrier were its forebears. Temperature extremes and excessive exercise can complicate the dog's myriad health problems. Curiously, it lives up to 15 years, and this is sufficient time to form a very close bond with the pet Boston Terrier.

The Boston Terrier weighs 10 to 25 pounds, and many people expect a weightier creature. It is really quite small. This miniature muscle-bound dog is just 15 to 17 inches high, at the withers. The withers are the highest part of the back that meets the neck. It's where the shoulder blades are. It's a common way to measure the height of a dog. The Boston Terrier has a short coat that's a combination of white and brindle, brown, or black. The coat is paltry and requires minimal grooming and brushing. Brindle refers to a streaky, spotty, blotchy coat with a predominance of a brown color. The characteristic black and white is most commonly seen in photographs and postcards. Short teeth, muzzle, and set of ears sit atop a cute rounded face. Straight, muscular legs hold up a compact frame, and they rest on small, round feet. The Boston Terrier dog has intelligent, alert eyes that convey wellness gentility. The big eyes rest evenly in its square face. The Boston Terrier has a body that is well proportioned over the many parts. Its gentility and dignified, yet casual, manner have garnered it a grand title, the American Gentleman.

The Boston Terrier is not a Terrier according to the American Kennel Club. They were originally bred to be fighting dogs, but their aggression is no longer present. They get along well with various demographics: the elderly, children, teenagers, and non-canine and canine pets alike. Proper socialization at an early age encourages the Boston Terrier to be cuddly and affable.

The Boston Terrier is prone to cataracts, allergies, reverse sneeze, snoring, mucus build-up, cherry eye, deafness, heart murmur, and gas. Keep them hooked up with a veterinarian and nutritionist. Have the Boston Terrier checked for the common problems of the short-snout breeds. Dog clothing is on par for a safe heated dog bed or mat. Temperature extremes are dangerous for this breed so a human heated bed can cause skin problems. Spine curvature is something to watch for too. Boston Terriers have lost their aggression in lieu of quieter, gentler qualities befitting companions.
