The American Bulldog, also called the Old Country Bulldog, is a dog with an unforgettable face. American Bulldogs weigh 75 to 125 pounds. They are 20 to 28 inches high at the withers. The American Bulldog coat is short, stiff, coarse, dense, and close-fitting. Their coat comes in white patches with brindle, red, tan, and other shades of these colors. They have half a dozen to a dozen puppies per litter. Their lifespan is 8 to 15 years long.

The American Bulldog looks like the English Bulldog except that it's slimmer, taller, and more athletic. American Bulldogs are stout, strong, big-boned, and graceful. They're light as a feather on their feet.. It's surprising for their size. Their strong, rectangular, linear head proportions are powerful. Their muzzles are box-shaped. Their noses sit under furrowed brows. Their ears are erect or hang loosely. American Bulldogs have sturdy necks, big chests, and slender legs.

The American Bulldog is a working dog that was created to catch errant livestock and to protect private property. Farmers adored the American Bulldog, especially in the United States. They're bigger than English Bulldogs, but they're the nearest relative thereof because they were not changed to such a great extent in the American colonies. There are two types of American Bulldog. The Johnson and Scott types are the two different kinds, and they're named after the breeders responsible for creating them. The Classic is attributed to John D. Johnson and the Standard or Performance type is attributed to Allen Scott.

The American Bulldog engaged in the crazy sport of bull bating. Most of this dog's stock emigrated from England with their owners. The American Bulldog became larger and stronger than its English counterpart. Its temperament was markedly softer though. John D. Johnson came back home from World War II to discover that the American Bulldog was almost extinct. He traveled far and wide across the South to rescue the dog from extinction. He is the only reason why the American Bulldog remains to this day.

The American Bulldog has been used to hunt bear, muskrat, raccoon, squirrels, rats, and other rodents and wild game. American Bulldogs can guard, drive cattle, track, and protect. The American Bulldog is sometimes mistaken for the American Pit Bull Terrier. Both are muscular with white patches and have similar muzzles, faces, and ears. Their temperament is alert, happy, and amiable. They need to be introduced to strangers or else they'll suspect something awry. They adore children. However, they can inadvertently or mistakenly knock down a child with its brute strength and heavy-set frame. They need firm, fair, and consistent training. Don't let them fail to get enough exercise, or they can become irritated and stubborn. American Bulldogs have a lot of energy to expel. American Bulldogs are happiest when they have a job to do.
