The American Black and Tan Coonhound is, foremost, a working dog that does well on the trail, chases the prey up trees, and can forego comfort when it's forced to withstand difficult terrain and harsh temperatures. The American Black and Tan Coonhound main purpose and use is hunting raccoons. It hunts by scent alone. American Black and Tan Coonhounds excel at trailing them and chasing them up into trees. Its other features like bravery and endurance make it suitable for hunting various types of wild game. American Black and Tan Coonhounds can even trail bears and moose. The dog itself is strong, agile, courageous, and it has a strong, rhythmic, powerful gait. Its strides are wide, and it covers a lot of terrain in a short amount of time. American Black and Tan Coonhounds weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. Its 23 to 27 inches high at the withers. It has a smooth, glistening, short coat, and it has roughly 8 puppies each litter. It has a lifespan of 10 to 12 years.

The American Black and Tan Coonhound is a rare breed because it's 100% American in origin. Many hounds like the Bloodhound, Foxhound, and others originated in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, the American Black and Tan Coonhound breed was fully established. It was first ordained and registered in 1912 by the United States Kennel Club. The more prestigous American Kennel Club registered it formally in 1945. Every Black and Tan Coonhound has strong hunting instincts and desires. It needs to hunt to stay true to its internal drives. If not, it could lose some measure of happiness. Dozens of generations bred this American Black and Tan Coonhound for the sole purpose of hunting. They might go dozens of miles in search of prey. It's hard to divert its attention once its mind is made up to follow a scent.

The American Black and Tan Coonhound is a bouncy, lovable breed that's flexible and adapts to diverse situations very well. American Black and Tan Coonhounds enjoy people and family. They don't disagree much with other animals, and children are very good pairs for them. Even though they're big, they're playful and sweet. Get a large yard because this dog will want a place to roam in. Hunting scars are not considered faults by the American Kennel Club. American Black and Tan Coonhounds go their own way so don't try to instill obedience into them. They live fine indoors or outdoors. They require socialization with other dogs from an early age and plenty of exercise to stay emotionally fit. American Black and Tan Coonhounds like to relax, and they love to lounge on furniture.

The American Black and Tan Coonhound is happiest when it trees and chases small animals. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, two of the founding fathers, were indispensable in breeding and writing about this breed. American Black and Tan Coonhounds make great watch dogs too.
