In 1963, what was thought to be the last pair of Alano Espanol was exhibited in the Retiro Park in Madrid. Soon after that, the breed was considered to be completely extinct, but surviving specimens were found, primarily in Encartaciones Valley in northern Spain. The Alano Espanol are able to climb trees with amazing cat-like agility and are capable of leaping to great heights from a standstill position.
