Airedale terriers are from Airedale, located in Yorkshire, England. Thus, Airedale terriers breed derives its nomenclature from the region that it originated in. Interestingly enough, the Airedale terrier is the weightiest terrier, coming in at 100 pounds maximum and 50 pounds minimum. The Airedale terrier was bred for the purposes of rounding up otters in and around the river Aire. They were not otters’ best friends to say the least.
The Airedale terrier has the capacity to be an excellent guard, watch, and security dog. Its active tendencies are not confined to otter extractions and hunting. The Airedale terrier is one of the more intelligent breeds with excellent retention skills and a fine fighting spirit. The Airedale terrier is not overly aggressive.
The Airedale terrier breed needs plenty of time outdoors because their energy levels are high, and a litter of 5 to 10 or more puppies is quite a handful. They make great companions and family dogs because of their overall utility to a home. The Airedale terriers are not vicious or fearful. Thus, they're good security dogs for a single woman or family. With a lifespan approaching 13 years, they're in it for the long haul.
The appearance of the Airedale terrier is recognizable right off the bat because of their short, curly, wiry coat and black back, tan legs and face. The coat of the Airedale terrier itself feels thick, dense, and close to the skin. It's even a little rough. The Airedale terriers don't shed. At dog shows, a small knife is used to strip away some minor hair areas. The tail should be docked if it's used for a dog show in the United States. The surgical procedure is common in the United States, and it should occur within 5 days of the animal's birth. It's prohibited in some foreign countries unless it's strictly for the dog's health or there’s an error in the tail. The eyes should be beady, opaque, small, dark brown, and full of intelligence and mischief. The Airedale terrier has a lot of energy to expend, and it comes through in his eyes. The eyes should not have cloudy, soft, or light brown characteristics.
The Airedale terrier has a temperament bordering on annoying, agitating, belligerent, surly, and troublesome. In general, no violence ever comes from it, but it's got a mischievous quality. It’s all fun and games. The inverse is that it can be very defined in its will and stand strong by its position. It's hard to sway an Airedale terrier sometimes. They love their masters and fellows, but they’re potentially harmful to others that like to threaten. Thus, they’re great guard dogs.
Cancer, natural deaths via old age, and diseases involving urology and cardiology are the common causes of death of Airedale terriers. Skin disorders often go unnoticed because of the dense coat that universally covers the dog. However, they're quite common. A fun fact is that the German Shepherd is the de facto dog for police investigations, but Airedale Terriers had this role beforehand.
