Parrots
Every year, approximately 250,000 parrots are imported to the United States from Africa, Central and South America, and Australia to satisfy a demand for exotic birds as pets because they are intelligent, magnificently colored, and speak well. An estimated 25,000 wild parrots are smuggled in from Mexico (second-largest illegal border business with drug smuggling as first.) Many parrots die of suffocation, starvation, inhumane treatment while in transport. Largely, international trade and habitat destruction threatens many parrots groups.
