The Great Blue Heron, a long-necked, long-billed, long-legged wader, lives around water feeding upon fish, amphibians, snakes, small mammals, beetles, and aquatic plants. It catches fish by standing still or slowly wading. Over half die within their first year. They prefer to nest in tops of trees, rock ledges, sea cliffs, and the ground away from humans. All four subspecies live in North America. The great white heron is undergoing a color phase from blue.
