Cultivated from Malaysian stock, the Rhode Island Red Chicken is a domestic species developed in Rhode Island, Massachussetts. As an excellent farm bird, the Rhode Island Red is a hardy and reliable producer of brown eggs even in marginal conditions. As early as 6 months of age, these chickens can produce between 200 and 300 eggs per hen per year. Interbreeding practices have compelled conservationists to place the "heritage" Red Rhode Island bird on a "Watch" status.
