In the wild peafowl live in small family groups. These groups consist of one male and several females. These birds are polygamous. One male can mate four or five females. As a rule peahens do not lay eggs during their first year.

Peahens are able to lay eggs at the age of two or three years. As a rule females lay from 6 to 10 eggs. The eggs of these birds are light brown in color. It is rather interesting that if you take away the eggs from the nest, the mature female may lay one more clutch of eggs.
