Peahens are ready to breed at the age of two years. These birds will sometimes lay fertile eggs as yearlings. Peahens usually lay these eggs late in summer after they have turned one year old. It is better when a yearling Peahen is in the same pen with a mature male.

Males of these birds are mature if they are at least three years old. The tail train plays a very important role in the breeding cycle of these birds. After the males are 5 or 6 years old, the tail train will remain consistent in length and quality for the rest of the bird's life.
