The Newf’s ancestors may have included the Great Pyrenees and Tibetan Mastiff. They adapted to the rugged conditions of the area by developing webbed feet, long flews and water-resistant coat, which allows them to remain in the water for a long time.

These animals come from Newfoundland Island in Canada, but were developed in Great Britain. They are often confused with St. Bernards, but in fact, they have no common genetic background. However, the Newf contributed his gene to the St. Bernard when distemper nearly destroyed the latter. In any newfoundland dog club you will be adviced upon training for this dog breed.
